Philosophy

A number is never presented without the reasoning that produced it.

This page sets out the beliefs that shape how the work is done, and why.

Our foundation

The practice rests on a simple conviction: pricing decisions made without visible reasoning are difficult to trust, revisit, or explain to a partner. Whatever the conclusion, it should be possible to trace it back to a specific line in the accounts and a specific judgment about what that line means.

This is not a claim to certainty. It is a preference for reasoning that can be examined, over conclusions that arrive already finished.

Philosophy and vision

Pricing work is often treated as a calculation to be handed off and returned as a finished answer. We see it instead as a deliberation — closer to a council table than a laboratory bench — where figures and the people affected by them sit in the same room.

The vision is modest: not to replace a company's judgment, but to give it something clearer to judge.

Core beliefs

Records over averages

An industry benchmark describes a category. A company's own accounts describe that company. We favour the latter wherever it is available, because the specific mix of what a business sells rarely matches the average of its sector.

No number without its assumptions

A figure separated from the reasoning behind it can be misread or misapplied months later. Every calculation we produce carries a note of what it assumes, placed immediately beside it.

The decision stays with the client

We set out options and their implications, including the uncomfortable ones. What to do with that is not ours to decide.

Principles in practice

In a Margin Structure Review, this means working line by line through actual accounting records rather than applying a category-wide margin assumption. In a Price Position Discussion, it means naming the positions that would be difficult for the company as it stands, not only the ones that flatter the current price.

In the Quarterly Figures Review, it means asking the plain questions an owner may be too close to the numbers to ask themselves.

A human-centred approach

No two companies carry the same mix of products, history, or constraints, and a review written for one rarely transfers cleanly to another. Sessions are built around the specific records and questions in front of us, not a standard template applied regardless of context.

Innovation through intention

The methods here are not novel for their own sake. Where a well-established approach — cost-plus, value-based, tiered pricing — already serves a purpose well, we use it. Where something in a specific engagement calls for a different lens, we build one, but only when the underlying question demands it.

Integrity and transparency

Every session produces a written record — not a polished summary written afterward, but a note of what was actually discussed and why. This is as much a discipline for us as a courtesy to the client: it keeps our own reasoning honest across engagements.

Community and collaboration

Pricing sessions are built to include up to four participants for a reason: the people who will act on a decision usually understand its practical constraints better than any single figure at the table. The work is meant to be discussed, not delivered.

Long-term thinking

A single review answers a question for a moment in time. The Quarterly Figures Review exists because we believe lasting change comes from a rhythm of attention, not a single intervention — a company checking in on its own numbers regularly, with informed company alongside it.

What this means for you

If you work with us, expect to see the working, not just the conclusion. Expect assumptions written down beside every figure. Expect the final decision — whether to change a price, drop a line, or leave things as they are — to remain entirely yours.

That is the promise behind everything described on this page.
